Eye Laser Surgery
Eye Laser Surgery - Eye Surgery That Offers Laser Vision
Correction
Eye laser surgery, such as LASIK, can correct certain vision problems like hyperopia (farsightedness), myopia
(nearsightedness) and astigmatism. This type of eye surgery works by improving the focusing power of the eye by
changing the shape of the cornea. First, a flap is cut in the cornea to expose the inner layer for reshaping.
Then a laser is used to remove some of this inner layer to reshape the cornea. Afterwards, the flap is
replaced.
Who Is A Good Candidate for Eye Laser
Surgery
Not everyone with myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism is a good candidate for this type of eye
surgery. The following are some of the factors that need to be taken into consideration:
- Eye laser surgery is prohibited to those under the age of 18. Also, certain jobs
prohibit laser eye treatment surgery, for example the military. It is therefore important to take not only your
current job's requirements into consideration, but also any future job plans. For example, a college student who
wishes to keep all career options open may wish not to have laser eye surgery, or at least not yet. On the other
hand, someone who is already too old to join the military and who has a stable career in another field (which
doesn't prohibit this type of eye surgery) may be a better candidate for such laser vision correction
procedure.
- A good candidate for eye laser surgery would not have or have had any additional eye problems,
any other health issues or under certain medication. Certain eye conditions which are otherwise harmless may also
preclude laser eye surgery, and a common example would be dry eyes. Anyone with an autoimmune disease (e.g. lupus,
rheumatoid arthritis) and/or is taking steroid drugs would not be suitable for laser eye surgery, because these
situations prevent proper wound healing after the eye surgery.
- If considering eye laser surgery, it is important that the focusing power of the eye be
stable. This means that no changes in prescription should have occurred in the last 12 months. This eye surgery is
not suitable for those who participate in contact sports where there is high chance of getting blows to the head or
eyes.
Things To Note Before And After Eye Laser Surgery
It's also important for those considering eye laser surgery to be able to make arrangements for
practical considerations.
For example, you will need to undergo an eye exams to ascertain whether you are suitable to have
the eye laser surgery. You will also need to arrange for someone to
accompany and drive you home right after the eye surgery and take a few days off work to recover. After the
laser eye treatment surgery, it is possible that wearing an eye shield will be required for a while. It is also
important that you are able to understand and keep up with taking any medications prescribed afterward, for
example eye drops. It is also critical that you are able to keep appointments for follow-up care, and that you
will seek help if problems occur.
Therefore to get laser vision correction through eye laser surgery, the
individual must fit the medical requirements, be over the age of 18 and not considering a career which prohibits
this type of eye surgery. It is also important to make appropriate arrangements such as transportation to and
from the surgery. The individual must follow the post-surgery care instructions strictly.
